What's the Buzz?!

I just finished binding a quilt that I made from a guild workshop. The pattern is titled Buzz Saw and was published in Fons and Porter several years ago. I'm really happy with the bright fabrics and best of all except for the background and backing all the fabric was in my stash!! I'm not sure if you've seen this one previously; however, if you have, here it is quilted and bound.

PS - This one is for sale on my etsy site.

It's The Little Things

Some days there is so much satisfaction in doing some of the mindless little things of our quilting craft. In this case, I spent several hours making and pressing the bindings for 3 quilts that went off to the quilter....I believe you have seen them all.....the plaid is for the Opposites Attract, the burgundy for the tropical kaleidoscope, and the fireworks for the patriotic quilt. They are made and ready to go whenever the quilts come back. I felt a real sense of accomplishment as well as relief in having them done. I know that when the quilts come back I won't have that extra job waiting for me and I can get right to the finishing up of them :)

Along that same note, I finished labeling and binding a challenge quilt and have the binding stitched on and ready to hand finish on a workshop quilt....debating whether to share the challenge with you guys, I'm really, really pleased with the result and it doesn't have to be turned in until November....not sure I can wait until then to post...

What Came First???

Did you ever buy the most wonderful fabric and have no idea what you would use it for..but had to have it??? I bet you did...lol.... Well in my case (only one example of many impulse purchases...) I bought this gorgeous patriotic print about a year ago. Not only did I buy it, but I bought enough of the stuff to make sure no matter what I decided to do I would have enough..and then some. Well lo and behold, while taking a road trip to a quilt store I hadn't previously visited, I turned up the perfect pattern and fabric to turn my impulse buy into a quilt. In this case, the backing. The pattern is a free one from http://www.quiltedtreasures.com/ and the fabric was purchased at the quilt shop, but is also available through the website. Now my quilt has some of the backing fabric fussy cut to act as centers on my front.....why you might ask?! I thought I knew more than the pattern designer and when I purchased the fabric for the centers I just knew that there were more motifs than I could possibly need. so I bought less than the recommended yardage.....WRONG. When you cut them to the designated size, you lose all the surrounding motifs so I was very, very short. Instead of going back for more (which I usually do) I decided to fussy cut some of my original fabric to add in...you can see them with the white background. They do stand out more than what the original pattern called for; however, I think they add a little zing to the front. I can't wait to get it quilted and enjoy both the front and back.
So in my case which came first? The backing!!! How about you?

Off to The Show

Today, i am heading up to Edison new jersey (about an hour ride for me) to the NJ State Quilt Guild annual show. This is one of the larger local shows for me. Can't wait to see the wonderful quilts and what the vendors have brought to lighten my wallet. If I'm lucky, I might get a pic or two to share with those of you who can't be there.

Quilt Block GIVEAWAY - Yeah!

OK, in an effort to gain some followers to my site, I am going to have my first ever giveaway...Whoot (as my daughter would say). I am giving away 10 finished 4 patch kaleidoscope blocks and the precut squares (thats the small stack in the lower left hand corner of the photo) to make an additional 38 which will give you a finished total of 48 5.5" squares...set on point and you have a great quilt!! If any of you have ever tried any type of kaleidoscope block you know that the most challenging part is the stacking, lining up, and cutting exact patches....I have done the hard work for you. Check my prior posts to view the quilt I made from these squares. My finished one is off to the quilter so I will post the finished product when I get it back. The pattern I used for this quilt is 4 Patch Stacked Posies by H.D. Designs.

Rules:

Simply comment to this post and tell me about any kaleidoscope you have tried or want to try in the future. Post all comments prior to midnight June 30 and I will draw a random number to determine the winner. Winner will be posted on the blog on July 1 and can contact me with shipping address.

Sizzlin Sixties

This is what is currently on the design wall. It's a newer pattern from a book called Sizzlin' Sixties. This particular pattern is called opposites attract. I decided to use a lower contrast collection Chez Moi....love love love this fabric. I have also started another from the same book the whirlygig pattern. I'm doing this in a totally different colorway...more along the darker repro lines...alot of the fabrics from Minick and Simpsons new line. Keep your eyes on the blog for photos of that one coming later.

These are going to be class samples for an upcoming class at the local shop where i teach. You can visit their website at http://www.littleshopforquilting.com/ .

Trick or Treat Photos

As I promised some photos of some of the blocks I have been working on. I am using 30's/40's repro fabrics on mine. The first photo shows a what 32 blocks look like stacked up (that's how many I'm up to..). The pattern calls for 291 blocks, can you just imagine what that stack of blocks would look like?!
Later on I will put them up on the design wall and photograph for you; however I have a class sample that I'm working on to teach a fall class at my local quilt shop. I have also taken pics of that, I will post them for you in the next day or so.

Trick or Treat ~~ I'm in!

Yea, I have finally broken the "web ring" code and am up and running as part of Pink and Barbara's Trick or Treat Basket ring. I did count up my blocks and I have 32 completed to date. I am in the middle of a hand quilting project so I will get back to these little cuties by early next week. In the meantime, I am charging up the camera to share some pics of my progress so far.
Thanks for the help Barbara!

Basket Sew Along

I have just joined a webring and sew along for a sweet little basket pattern that I was already working on! I have to count up how many I have made to date and get a picture posted. I'm just waiting to finalized my webring subscription. This is a little new for me and the copy didn't want to paste to my hotmail, so I'm waiting for help from the originating website and hope to be part of this ring very shortly. In the meantime, I'm heading off to count up and snap a few pictures of the baskets I'm working on!
